How to Keep Your Upholstery Clean Between Professional Cleans

A professional upholstery clean can genuinely transform a sofa, armchair or dining chair — lifting stains, removing odours and restoring the fabric to something close to its original condition. But how long those results last depends largely on what you do in between appointments.

Here's our practical guide to maintaining your upholstery between professional cleans — based on the questions we get asked most often by our customers across West London.

1. Vacuum Regularly — Including the Bits You Can't See

Most people vacuum their floors but forget their sofas. Upholstery attracts the same dust, pet hair, skin cells and allergens as carpet — and in a household where people spend hours sitting every day, the build-up can be significant.

Vacuum your sofas and armchairs at least once a week using an upholstery attachment. Pay particular attention to the crevices between and beneath cushions — this is where crumbs, hair and dust accumulate most rapidly.

If you have removable cushion covers, take them off occasionally and vacuum the foam or padding underneath too.

2. Rotate and Flip Cushions

If your sofa has reversible cushions, get into the habit of flipping and rotating them every few weeks. This distributes wear evenly, prevents one side from becoming flattened or faded faster than the other, and ensures any surface soiling is spread rather than concentrated.

It sounds simple — and it is — but it's one of the most effective things you can do to extend the life and appearance of your upholstery.

3. Deal With Spills Immediately

The single most important rule of upholstery care: act fast. The longer a spill sits, the deeper it penetrates the fibres and the harder it becomes to remove — even for a professional.

  • When a spill happens: Blot immediately with a clean, dry white cloth.
  • Never rub — rubbing spreads the stain and pushes it deeper into the fabric.
  • Work from the outside of the spill inward to prevent spreading.
  • For water-based spills (wine, juice, coffee), blotting alone often prevents a stain from setting.
  • For oily or greasy spills, sprinkle a small amount of bicarbonate of soda on the area first to absorb the grease before blotting.

What to avoid: don't use coloured cloths (the dye can transfer), don't scrub, and don't reach immediately for strong cleaning products — many household cleaners can strip fabric treatments, cause discolouration or leave residue that attracts more dirt.

4. Know Your Fabric Code

Most sofas and chairs have a care label, usually found under a cushion or on the underside of the piece. The code on this label tells you a lot:

  • W — water-based cleaners only
  • S — solvent-based cleaners only (no water)
  • WS — either water or solvent-based cleaners
  • X — vacuum only, no liquids

This is crucial information. Using water on an S-coded fabric — or a solvent on a W-coded one — can cause permanent damage. If you're unsure, always err on the side of caution and call a professional.

5. Protect High-Use Areas

If you have a favourite spot on the sofa, or a particular armchair that gets daily use, consider using a washable throw or cushion cover on that area. This takes the brunt of daily wear, oils from skin and hair, and any accidental spills — and can simply be washed regularly.

This is especially useful in homes with children or pets, where upholstery takes significantly more punishment than average.

6. Keep Pets Off — Or Accept the Consequences

We're realists. If your dog has always slept on the sofa, telling them to stop now is a battle you're unlikely to win. But if you're trying to maintain your upholstery in good condition, a washable pet blanket over their favourite spot is a practical compromise.

Pet hair can also be removed more effectively with a rubber glove or a slightly damp cloth rather than a standard vacuum — the friction lifts hair from the fabric more efficiently.

7. Book a Professional Clean Once a Year

All the above tips help maintain your upholstery between cleans — but they're no substitute for a proper professional clean. Over time, body oils, atmospheric dust and embedded soiling build up in ways that surface cleaning simply can't address.

An annual professional clean removes this deep-seated dirt, refreshes the fabric, and can address any stains or odour issues that have developed over the year.

For households with children, pets or allergy sufferers, every six months is a better target.
