How Often Should You Get Your Carpets Professionally Cleaned?
If you've ever looked down at your carpet and thought "it doesn't look *that* bad" — you're probably overdue a clean. The truth is, carpets hide an enormous amount of dirt, allergens and bacteria long before they look visibly dirty. By the time a carpet looks grubby, it's been harbouring problems for months.
So how often should you actually book a professional carpet clean? The honest answer depends on your household — but here are the guidelines we give our West London customers every day.
Once a Year as a Minimum
For most households, a professional deep clean once a year is the absolute minimum. This applies to low-traffic rooms like spare bedrooms or formal living rooms that don't see daily use.
An annual clean removes the build-up of dust mites, dead skin cells, pet dander and airborne pollutants that settle into carpet fibres over time — none of which regular vacuuming can fully shift.
Every 6 Months for Busy Households
If you have children, pets, or a home that sees a lot of foot traffic — think open-plan living areas, hallways and stairs — every six months is a much more realistic target.
In West London especially, where we're constantly tracking in pollution, dust and damp from the streets, carpets in high-traffic areas deteriorate faster than people expect. A six-monthly clean keeps them looking their best and significantly extends their lifespan.
Every 3–4 Months if You Have Pets
Pets are wonderful. They are also relentless contributors to carpet wear. Pet hair, dander, muddy paws and the occasional accident all require more frequent professional attention.
If you have dogs or cats with access to carpeted areas, we recommend a professional clean every 3–4 months. Between cleans, a good quality pet-specific vacuum used daily makes a real difference.
After Any Major Event
Beyond your regular schedule, there are certain triggers that should prompt an immediate booking regardless of when you last had your carpets cleaned:
- A house party or large gathering
- Moving into a new property (you don't know what the previous occupants left behind)
- A water leak or flood — even a small one
- A stubborn spill that wasn't treated immediately
- A new baby or a family member with allergies or asthma
Why Professional Cleaning Matters More Than Vacuuming
A good vacuum is essential for daily maintenance, but it only removes surface-level debris. Professional hot-water extraction — the method we use — reaches deep into the carpet pile, loosening and extracting the dirt, allergens and bacteria that live at the base of the fibres.
Regular professional cleaning also helps carpets dry faster (less moisture is needed when they're cleaned more frequently), reduces wear on the fibres, and keeps colours looking vibrant for longer.
A Note on West London Homes
Many properties across Ealing, Chiswick, Hammersmith and surrounding areas feature older carpets in period homes — sometimes original to the property.
These require particular care. Over-wetting or using the wrong cleaning solutions on older pile can cause shrinkage or colour bleed. Always use a specialist who understands how to assess your carpet type before starting work.
